What is Multiple Sclerosis?
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an unpredictable disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. MS is a long-lasting disease that can affect the brain, spinal cord, and the optic nerves in your eyes. The immune system attacks a fatty material called myelin, which wraps around your nerve fibers to protect them. Without the layer of protection, the nerves become damaged and can't properly send signals through the body.
The cause of MS is still unknown. Scientists believe that a combination of environmental and genetic factors contribute to the risk of developing MS.
